Andrew Bumbalough and Jennifer Barringer Capture First Place Titles in 26th Annual

Foot Locker Cross Country Championships
South Regional

Charlotte, N.C., November 27, 2004 – Andrew Bumbalough of Brentwood, Tenn., and Jennifer Barringer of Oviedo, Fla., won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) South Regional at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, N.C., today.

In the boys’ race, Scott MacPherson of Plano, Texas, took the lead at the 1.5-mile mark, as Andrew Bumbalough was trailing in third.  At the two-mile mark, Bumbalough, a senior at Brentwood Academy, pulled ahead to claim the lead and win the South Regional title in 14:32, breaking the course record by 11 seconds. The record was previously held by high school mile record-holder Alan Webb, who won the 2000 South Regional in 14:43.  MacPherson finished second in 14:48, with Justin Harbor of Palm Coast, Fla., placing third in 14:57.

This year’s competition mirrored last year’s event as MacPherson, a senior at Plano Senior High School, and Bumbalough ran neck-and-neck both in the 2003 Regionals and National Finals. MacPherson placed fourth in the South Regionals and 14th at the Nationals, while Bumbalough placed fifth at the Regionals and 13th in the National Finals.

In the girls’ race, returning Regional Champion Jennifer Barringer of Oviedo, Fla., took no chances by claiming an early lead and never relinquishing her first-place coveted spot.  At the two-mile mark, she widened the gap by 100 yards and went on to reclaim her title in 17:27.  Barringer, a senior at Oviedo High School, placed third in last year’s National Finals.

Newcomer Jillian Skinner of Brentwood, Tenn., finished second in 17:32, with Carmen Mims of Louisville, Ky., following closely at her heels to place third in 17:35.  A three-time FLCCC regional returnee, this is the first year that Mims, a senior, has qualified for the FLCCC Nationals.

The runners enjoyed good racing conditions, despite the race course being damp due to overcast skies. The temperature was in the mid-40s, with no wind aiding the runners.

The top eight boys and top eight girls qualified to compete against runners from three other regional meets in the 26th Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.
